Aims & Scope

The Journal of Aquaculture Research (JOAR) is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by Directive Publications and dedicated to the science and practice of aquaculture, fish farming, and mariculture. It advances the global aquaculture research community by disseminating rigorous, original scholarship that links aquatic biology with sustainable food production and the blue economy.

The journal covers production systems including recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), pond and cage culture, aquaponics, and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture; aquatic animal nutrition and aquafeed formulation; fish health, biosecurity, and disease management; water quality, salinity, and osmoregulation in brackish, saline, and freshwater environments; and genetics, selective breeding, and climate-resilient species. It also welcomes work on shellfish and shrimp culture, aquatic ecology, post-harvest processing, and the role of aquaculture in food security.

JOAR serves aquaculture scientists, fisheries researchers, feed and animal-health specialists, aquaponics practitioners, and policymakers. We publish original research, reviews, case reports, methods, and editorials addressing theoretical, methodological, and applied questions in the field.

Every submission undergoes double-blind peer review. Accepted articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence with authors retaining copyright, are assigned a permanent Crossref DOI, and are made discoverable through OpenAlex, Google Scholar, and an OAI-PMH endpoint. The journal follows COPE ethical principles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What topics does the Journal of Aquaculture Research cover?

JOAR covers the full breadth of aquaculture science, including recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), pond, cage and offshore mariculture, aquaponics, aquatic animal nutrition and aquafeed, fish health and biosecurity, water quality and osmoregulation, selective breeding and aquaculture genetics, shellfish and shrimp culture, aquatic ecology, and the role of aquaculture in sustainable food security.

Who should read and publish in the Journal of Aquaculture Research?

The journal is intended for aquaculture and fisheries scientists, aquatic veterinarians and fish-health specialists, feed and nutrition researchers, aquaponics and RAS practitioners, environmental and water-quality researchers, and policymakers working on the blue economy and food security. Authors with original or review work in any of these areas are encouraged to submit.

How do I submit my manuscript to the Journal of Aquaculture Research?

Submissions are made online through the Directive Publications submission system. Prepare your manuscript according to the journal's author guidelines, then upload your files for editorial screening. Suitable manuscripts proceed to double-blind peer review, and you will be kept informed of your submission's status throughout the process.

What article types does the Journal of Aquaculture Research accept?

JOAR accepts original research articles, review and systematic-review articles, short communications, methods papers, case reports (for example, novel disease or production case studies), and editorials addressing the theoretical, methodological, and applied dimensions of aquaculture research.

Is the Journal of Aquaculture Research open access, and who holds the copyright?

Yes. Every article is published fully open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence, so anyone can read, share, and reuse the work with attribution. Authors retain copyright to their own work, and each article receives a permanent Crossref DOI for citability and long-term access.

How does peer review work at the Journal of Aquaculture Research?

All submissions undergo double-blind peer review, in which the identities of authors and reviewers are kept confidential from one another. Manuscripts are first screened editorially for scope and quality, then evaluated by independent experts in the relevant aquaculture subfield. The journal follows COPE ethical principles for publication integrity.

Is there an article-processing charge, and are waivers available?

As an open-access journal, JOAR applies an article-processing charge on acceptance to cover the costs of peer review, production, DOI registration, and permanent hosting. Waivers and discounts are available; authors who need financial support are encouraged to request a waiver during submission. There are no charges to read or download articles.

How are articles in the Journal of Aquaculture Research discovered and indexed?

Each article is assigned a Crossref DOI and is made discoverable through OpenAlex and Google Scholar, with full metadata available for harvesting via the journal's OAI-PMH endpoint. The journal is also working toward inclusion in additional aquaculture and open-access directories to broaden the reach and citation of published research.
