Aims & Scope

The Journal of Ophthalmology & Eye Disorders (JOED) is a peer-reviewed, open-access ophthalmology journal published by Directive Publications. It disseminates rigorous clinical and translational research across vision science and the full spectrum of eye disorders, serving ophthalmologists, optometrists, vision scientists, and trainees worldwide.

The journal welcomes original research, systematic reviews, clinical trials, and case reports spanning retinal and macular disease (including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and inherited retinal dystrophies), glaucoma and the optic nerve, cataract, cornea and anterior-segment disease, uveitis and ocular inflammation, oculoplastic and orbital surgery, pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus, and neuro-ophthalmology.

JOED also prioritizes emerging methods such as deep learning and machine-learning-based retinal imaging, computer-assisted diagnosis, ocular imaging modalities, and the epidemiology of visual impairment and preventable blindness across diverse populations.

Every submission undergoes double-blind peer review. Accepted articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence with authors retaining copyright, are assigned a permanent Crossref DOI, and are made discoverable through OpenAlex, Google Scholar, and an OAI-PMH endpoint, following COPE ethical principles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What topics does the Journal of Ophthalmology & Eye Disorders cover?

JOED publishes research across the full breadth of ophthalmology and vision science, including retinal and macular disease (age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy), glaucoma and optic-nerve disorders, cataract, cornea and anterior-segment disease, uveitis, oculoplastic and orbital surgery, pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus, neuro-ophthalmology, AI-based ocular imaging, and the epidemiology of visual impairment and blindness.

Who should read and publish in the Journal of Ophthalmology & Eye Disorders?

JOED is intended for ophthalmologists, optometrists, vision scientists, ocular pathologists, retinal and glaucoma specialists, oculoplastic surgeons, pediatric eye-care providers, and graduate researchers seeking peer-reviewed, openly accessible research on eye disorders and vision science.

How do I submit a manuscript to the Journal of Ophthalmology & Eye Disorders?

Authors can submit original research, reviews, clinical studies, and case reports through the journal's submission page. Each manuscript undergoes double-blind peer review, and accepted articles are published open access under CC-BY 4.0 with a permanent Crossref DOI. Review the author guidelines for formatting and ethical requirements before submitting.

What article types does JOED accept?

JOED accepts original research articles, systematic and narrative reviews, clinical trial reports, brief communications, case reports and case series (such as rare retinal, neuro-ophthalmic, and pediatric presentations), and editorials addressing developments in ophthalmology and eye care.

Is the Journal of Ophthalmology & Eye Disorders open access, and who holds copyright?

Yes. JOED is fully open access. All articles are published under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence, and authors retain copyright. Articles are freely readable and reusable with attribution, and are discoverable via OpenAlex, Google Scholar, and the journal's OAI-PMH endpoint.

Does JOED charge an article-processing charge, and are waivers available?

As an open-access journal, JOED applies an article-processing charge on acceptance to support open dissemination, peer review, and DOI registration. Discounts and waivers are available, particularly for authors from low-resource settings. Contact the editorial office for current charges and waiver eligibility before submission.

How does peer review work at the Journal of Ophthalmology & Eye Disorders?

Every submission undergoes double-blind peer review, in which author and reviewer identities are mutually concealed to support impartial assessment. The journal follows COPE ethical principles for handling submissions, conflicts of interest, corrections, and retractions.

Is JOED indexed, and where can articles be discovered?

Every JOED article receives a permanent Crossref DOI and is discoverable through OpenAlex, Google Scholar, and the journal's OAI-PMH endpoint for harvesting. The journal is working toward additional scholarly indexing, including preparing for a DOAJ application, and assigns persistent identifiers to ensure long-term citability.
