Aims & Scope
The Journal of Hepatology is a peer-reviewed, open access journal from Directive Publications, advancing the science and clinical practice of hepatology and liver disease. It is an internationally accessible home for original research across hepatobiliary medicine, from molecular pathogenesis to bedside management.
The journal welcomes basic, translational, and clinical studies on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD/MASH), liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and bile duct tumors, viral hepatitis, cholestatic and autoimmune liver disease, portal hypertension, and liver transplantation. We publish original articles, reviews, case reports, and editorials, including non-invasive fibrosis assessment, imaging, and outcomes research.
Every submission undergoes double-blind peer review. Accepted articles are published under a CC-BY 4.0 licence with authors retaining copyright, receive a permanent Crossref DOI, and are discoverable via OpenAlex, Google Scholar, and OAI-PMH, in line with COPE principles.

Frequently Asked Questions
What topics does The Journal of Hepatology cover?
The Journal of Hepatology covers the full breadth of liver and hepatobiliary medicine, including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD/MASH), liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and bile duct tumors, viral hepatitis, cholestatic and autoimmune liver disease, portal hypertension, and liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery. It publishes both basic-science and clinical hepatology research.
Who should read and publish in The Journal of Hepatology?
The journal is aimed at hepatologists, gastroenterologists, hepatobiliary surgeons, liver pathologists, basic and translational scientists, and trainees working on liver disease. Researchers studying MASLD/MASH, cirrhosis, liver cancer, or viral hepatitis are encouraged to submit, and clinicians seeking open access, citable evidence will find relevant peer-reviewed articles.
Is The Journal of Hepatology open access, and what licence is used?
Yes. The Journal of Hepatology is fully open access. All accepted articles are published under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence, meaning authors retain copyright while readers worldwide can freely read, share, and reuse the work with proper attribution.
What types of articles can I submit to The Journal of Hepatology?
The journal accepts original research articles, systematic and narrative reviews, case reports, and editorials across hepatology. Submissions may use clinical, translational, basic-science, imaging, pharmacokinetic, or outcomes-research methods, provided they advance understanding of liver disease.
How does peer review work at The Journal of Hepatology?
Every manuscript submitted to The Journal of Hepatology undergoes double-blind peer review, in which the identities of authors and reviewers are kept confidential. The process follows COPE ethical principles to ensure rigorous, fair, and constructive evaluation of liver disease research before acceptance.
Does each article receive a DOI and how is it discoverable?
Yes. Every published article is assigned a permanent Crossref DOI to guarantee long-term citability and stable linking. Articles are also made discoverable through OpenAlex and Google Scholar and are exposed via an OAI-PMH endpoint for harvesting by indexing and discovery services.
Is there an article-processing charge, and are waivers available?
As an open access journal, The Journal of Hepatology applies an article-processing charge on acceptance to sustain publication. Waivers and discounts are available; authors who need financial assistance, including those from lower-income settings, are encouraged to contact the editorial office before or during submission.
Is The Journal of Hepatology indexed in databases like Scopus or PubMed?
The journal currently provides discoverability through Crossref DOIs, OpenAlex, Google Scholar, and OAI-PMH harvesting.
