Aims & Scope
Advances in Behavioral Neuroscience is a peer-reviewed, open access journal published by Directive Publications that examines how the nervous system gives rise to behavior. The journal publishes original research, reviews, case reports, and methodological papers spanning neural circuits of behavior, learning and memory, neuropharmacology, neuroethology, and the behavioral consequences of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Our remit bridges molecular, systems, and behavioral levels of analysis in both animal models and human populations.
We welcome work using contemporary tools and paradigms, including in vivo electrophysiology, optogenetics, the open field and other behavioral assays, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and machine learning approaches to behavioral phenotyping. Representative topics include neuroprotection in models of Parkinson's disease, neuroglial dysregulation in autism spectrum disorder, the neural basis of social behavior, and translational strategies that move behavioral neuroscience toward clinical application.
The journal serves neuroscientists, behavioral and comparative psychologists, neuropharmacologists, and translational and clinical researchers seeking a rigorous, internationally accessible venue. Every accepted manuscript undergoes double-blind peer review.
All articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) license with authors retaining copyright, receive a permanent Crossref DOI, and are made discoverable through OpenAlex, Google Scholar, and an OAI-PMH endpoint. Editorial practice follows COPE principles.

Frequently Asked Questions
What topics does Advances in Behavioral Neuroscience cover?
The journal covers the neural basis of behavior across molecular, systems, and behavioral levels. Core subfields include neural circuits of behavior, learning and memory, behavioral neuropharmacology, neuroethology, animal models of disease, in vivo electrophysiology, and the behavioral consequences of neurological and psychiatric conditions such as Parkinson's disease and autism spectrum disorder.
Who should read and publish in Advances in Behavioral Neuroscience?
It is intended for neuroscientists, behavioral and comparative psychologists, neuropharmacologists, neuroethologists, and translational or clinical researchers studying brain-behavior relationships. Both early-career and established investigators working with animal models, human cohorts, or computational behavioral methods are encouraged to submit.
What article types does the journal accept?
Advances in Behavioral Neuroscience accepts original research articles, review and systematic review articles, case reports, methods and protocol papers, and editorials. Methodological work on behavioral assays, neural recording, and machine learning approaches to behavioral phenotyping is particularly welcome.
Is Advances in Behavioral Neuroscience open access, and who holds copyright?
Yes. Every article is published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) license, and authors retain copyright. Readers worldwide can freely access, share, and reuse articles with attribution, which increases readership and citation potential for behavioral neuroscience research.
How does peer review work and how do I submit a manuscript?
All submissions undergo double-blind peer review, where author and reviewer identities are kept confidential. Authors submit through the journal's submission page after reviewing the author guidelines for formatting, ethics, and data-availability requirements specific to behavioral neuroscience studies.
Does every article receive a DOI, and where is the journal discoverable?
Yes. Each accepted article is assigned a permanent Crossref DOI to ensure stable citation and long-term availability. Content is discoverable via OpenAlex, Google Scholar, and the journal's OAI-PMH endpoint, and the publisher is preparing applications for additional scholarly indexes.
Is there an article-processing charge, and are waivers available?
An article-processing charge applies on acceptance to support open access publication, peer review, and DOI registration. Waivers and discounts are available; authors who need financial assistance should contact the editorial office before or during submission to discuss eligibility.
What ethical standards does the journal follow for behavioral and animal research?
Editorial and publishing decisions follow COPE principles. Studies involving animals or human participants must report appropriate ethics approvals and adhere to recognized welfare and reporting standards, including transparent description of behavioral protocols, sample sizes, and statistical methods.
