Aims & Scope

Advances in Plastic Surgery is a peer-reviewed, open access plastic surgery journal published by Directive Publications, dedicated to the full spectrum of reconstructive, aesthetic, microsurgical and regenerative surgery. The journal publishes rigorous original research, systematic reviews, technique articles, case reports and editorials that advance clinical practice and translational science across the discipline.

The scope spans breast reconstruction and free-flap surgery (including DIEP flaps, microsurgical anastomosis, free-flap monitoring and drain management), craniofacial, maxillofacial and orthognathic surgery, hand surgery and replantation, burn and wound reconstruction, cutaneous tumor and skin lesion management, and aesthetic surgery. We particularly welcome work on regenerative techniques such as adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells, fat grafting, biomaterials and targeted drug delivery, alongside studies of patient-reported outcomes, quality of life and psychosocial impact.

Intended for plastic and reconstructive surgeons, microsurgeons, surgical trainees, and translational researchers, the journal connects bench and bedside through an internationally accessible platform.

Every submission undergoes double-blind peer review. Accepted articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence with authors retaining copyright, assigned a permanent Crossref DOI, and made discoverable through OpenAlex, Google Scholar and an OAI-PMH endpoint. Editorial practice follows COPE principles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What topics does Advances in Plastic Surgery cover?

Advances in Plastic Surgery covers the full field of plastic surgery: reconstructive and microsurgery (including DIEP and free flaps, breast reconstruction, hand surgery and replantation), craniofacial, maxillofacial and orthognathic surgery, burn and wound reconstruction, cutaneous tumor and skin lesion management, aesthetic surgery, and regenerative approaches such as adipose-derived stem cells, fat grafting and biomaterials. We also publish patient-reported outcome and quality-of-life studies.

Who should read and publish in Advances in Plastic Surgery?

The journal is written for plastic and reconstructive surgeons, microsurgeons, craniofacial and hand surgeons, surgical trainees, and translational researchers working on tissue reconstruction and regeneration. If you conduct clinical, technique, or laboratory research in any area of plastic surgery, Advances in Plastic Surgery is an appropriate venue to read current evidence and submit your own work.

How do I submit a manuscript to Advances in Plastic Surgery?

You can submit through the journal's Submit page. We accept original research, systematic and narrative reviews, surgical technique articles, case reports, and editorials. Prepare your manuscript according to the Author Guidelines, then upload it for editorial assessment. Every in-scope submission entering review undergoes double-blind peer review.

What article types does Advances in Plastic Surgery accept?

The journal accepts original research articles, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, narrative and literature reviews, surgical technique and innovation reports, case reports and case series, and editorials or commentaries. Reviews on high-interest topics such as flap reconstruction, fat grafting, or microsurgical protocols are especially welcome and tend to attract citations.

Is Advances in Plastic Surgery open access, and what licence is used?

Yes. Advances in Plastic Surgery is fully open access. Accepted articles are published under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence, authors retain copyright, and each article receives a permanent Crossref DOI so it is freely readable and citable worldwide.

How does peer review work and how is the journal discoverable?

All in-scope submissions undergo double-blind peer review, conducted in line with COPE principles. Published articles are indexed for discovery through Crossref DOIs, OpenAlex and Google Scholar, and are exposed via an OAI-PMH endpoint for harvesting. As a new open access journal, Advances in Plastic Surgery is also working toward inclusion in additional scholarly databases.

Is there an article-processing charge, and are waivers available?

An article-processing charge applies on acceptance to support open access publication; there is no submission fee. Waivers and discounts are available, particularly for authors from lower-income settings or in cases of demonstrated need. Contact the editorial office for current fee details before or during submission.

How is Advances in Plastic Surgery different from other plastic surgery journals?

Unlike many society journals that are subscription-based or hybrid, Advances in Plastic Surgery is fully open access with CC-BY licensing and author-retained copyright. It welcomes the full breadth of the field, including translational and regenerative work, gives every article a permanent Crossref DOI, and offers a fair, double-blind review process with transparent, waiver-eligible charges.
