Aims & Scope
The Journal of Energy Research (JER) is a peer-reviewed, open access journal published by Directive Publications, dedicated to advancing knowledge across the full breadth of energy research. As a multidisciplinary energy research journal, JER publishes original studies on renewable energy, the global energy transition, sustainable energy systems, energy storage, combustion and alternative fuels, energy efficiency, and energy policy and governance.
The journal welcomes original research, critical reviews, case studies, short communications, and editorials spanning solar and wind generation, bioenergy and biofuels, hydrogen and power-to-x conversion, electrocatalysis and fuel cells, internal combustion engine emissions and performance, grid-scale and thermal energy storage, building energy efficiency, thermal comfort, and urban energy demand. Both technical and socio-technical perspectives are encouraged, including energy economics, access and equity, and decarbonization pathways toward net zero.
JER serves researchers, engineers, modellers, and policymakers seeking a trusted, internationally accessible venue. Every submission undergoes rigorous double-blind peer review. Accepted articles are published open access under a Creative Commons CC-BY 4.0 licence with authors retaining copyright, assigned a permanent Crossref DOI, and made discoverable through OpenAlex, Google Scholar, and an OAI-PMH endpoint. The journal follows COPE ethical principles and offers article-processing-charge waivers and discounts to support equitable participation worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions
What topics does the Journal of Energy Research cover?
The Journal of Energy Research (JER) covers renewable energy (solar, wind, bioenergy, geothermal), the energy transition and decarbonization, energy storage, combustion and alternative fuels, internal combustion engine performance and emissions, electrocatalysis and fuel cells, energy efficiency in the built environment, and energy policy, economics, and governance. It welcomes both technical and socio-technical research.
Who should read or publish in the Journal of Energy Research?
JER is aimed at energy researchers, engineers, energy-systems modellers, materials and combustion scientists, sustainability scholars, and policymakers. Authors working on renewable generation, energy transition pathways, storage technologies, alternative fuels, or energy governance will find JER a fitting open access venue for their work.
How do I submit a manuscript to the Journal of Energy Research?
Prepare your manuscript according to the author guidelines and submit it through the journal's submission page. JER accepts original research articles, reviews, case studies, short communications, and editorials in energy research. All submissions enter double-blind peer review before any decision is made.
Is the Journal of Energy Research open access, and who holds copyright?
Yes. JER is fully open access. Accepted articles are published under a Creative Commons CC-BY 4.0 licence and authors retain copyright. Articles are free to read, download, and reuse with attribution, maximizing the reach and citation potential of energy research.
What is the peer review process and does each article get a DOI?
Every submission to JER undergoes double-blind peer review by independent experts in the relevant energy subfield. Each accepted article receives a permanent Crossref DOI and is made discoverable via OpenAlex, Google Scholar, and the journal's OAI-PMH endpoint, ensuring long-term citability and findability.
Are there article-processing charges or waivers for the Journal of Energy Research?
JER charges an article-processing charge only on acceptance, which supports open access publishing, DOI registration, and long-term preservation. Waivers and discounts are available; authors who need financial support, including those from lower-income regions, are encouraged to request a waiver during submission.
What article types does the Journal of Energy Research accept?
JER publishes original research articles, comprehensive and systematic review articles, case studies, technical short communications, and editorials. Review and policy-relevant articles on topics such as energy transition, energy storage, and alternative fuels are especially welcome for their citation and authority value.
Is the Journal of Energy Research indexed, and how discoverable are its articles?
Every JER article is registered with a Crossref DOI and is harvestable via the journal's OAI-PMH endpoint, making it discoverable through OpenAlex and Google Scholar. The journal follows COPE principles and is working toward further indexing, including preparing for a DOAJ application as it builds its published record.
