Aims & Scope

The Journal of Anatomy is a peer-reviewed, open access journal published by Directive Publications and dedicated to clinical, surgical, radiologic, developmental, and molecular anatomy. The journal advances understanding of human and comparative structure as it applies to research, medical education, and clinical practice, serving anatomists, surgeons, radiologists, clinicians, and basic scientists worldwide.

We publish original research, systematic and narrative reviews, case reports, technical notes, and editorials spanning gross and topographic anatomy, anatomical variations, cadaveric and imaging (MRI, CT, ultrasound) studies, embryology and developmental anatomy, neuroanatomy, cardiac and visceral morphology, and signaling pathways that shape form. Work documenting rare anatomical coexistences, surgical landmarks, and variation-related clinical syndromes is especially welcome.

Every submission undergoes rigorous double-blind peer review. Accepted articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence, with authors retaining copyright, and each receives a permanent Crossref DOI. Content is discoverable through OpenAlex and Google Scholar, exposed via our OAI-PMH endpoint, and the journal follows COPE ethical principles. An article-processing charge applies on acceptance, with waivers and discounts available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What topics does The Journal of Anatomy cover?

The Journal of Anatomy covers clinical, surgical, and radiologic anatomy, anatomical variations, gross and topographic anatomy, cadaveric and imaging studies, embryology and developmental anatomy, neuroanatomy, and cardiac and visceral morphology. It welcomes both human and comparative work that links anatomical structure to research and clinical practice.

Who should read and publish in The Journal of Anatomy?

The journal is intended for anatomists, surgeons, radiologists, clinicians, dentists, medical educators, and basic and developmental scientists. Authors studying anatomical variations, surgical landmarks, imaging anatomy, or developmental morphology will find a relevant, internationally accessible venue for their work.

What types of articles can I submit to The Journal of Anatomy?

We accept original research articles, systematic and narrative reviews, case reports, short technical notes, and editorials. Anatomical variation case reports, imaging-based anatomy studies, and review articles synthesizing surgical or topographic anatomy are particularly encouraged.

Is The Journal of Anatomy peer reviewed and open access?

Yes. Every submission undergoes double-blind peer review, and all accepted articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence so anyone can read and reuse them with attribution. Authors retain copyright to their work.

Will my anatomy article receive a DOI and be discoverable?

Yes. Each accepted article is assigned a permanent Crossref DOI and is discoverable through OpenAlex and Google Scholar. Metadata is also exposed through the journal's OAI-PMH endpoint for harvesting, supporting long-term citability and visibility.

Is there an article-processing charge, and are waivers available?

An article-processing charge applies only on acceptance; there are no submission fees. Waivers and discounts are available on request, particularly for authors from lower-income settings, so that ability to pay does not determine the chance to publish. Contact the editorial office for current details.

How does The Journal of Anatomy handle research and publication ethics?

The journal follows COPE ethical principles, requiring appropriate ethical approval and consent for cadaveric, clinical, and case-report material, transparent declaration of conflicts of interest, and adherence to authorship and integrity standards. Concerns are handled through corrections, expressions of concern, or retractions as warranted.

Is The Journal of Anatomy indexed in DOAJ, PubMed, or Scopus?

As a new open access journal, The Journal of Anatomy is already discoverable through Crossref, OpenAlex, and Google Scholar, and harvestable via OAI-PMH. It is working toward eligibility for indexing services such as DOAJ and PubMed Central; these applications are in progress and not yet achieved.
