Aims & Scope

The Journal of Biosciences & Bioengineering (JBB) is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by Directive Publications that advances fundamental and applied research across the life sciences and bioengineering. As a dedicated biosciences and bioengineering journal, JBB connects investigators working at the interface of biology and engineering, providing an internationally accessible platform for rigorous, original scholarship that informs research, education, and industrial practice.

The journal welcomes work spanning molecular biology and gene engineering (PCR cloning, plasmid vectors, recombinant protein expression), microbial and industrial biotechnology (fermentation, bioactive metabolites, enzyme technology), plant biotechnology and molecular pharming, proteomics, genomics, bioinformatics, and systems biology. We also publish environmental biotechnology, biochemical and bioprocess engineering, and cell and tissue engineering studies that address real-world translational challenges.

JBB serves academic researchers, graduate students, biotechnologists, and industry scientists. We accept original research articles, reviews, methods papers, case reports, and editorials. Every submission undergoes double-blind peer review.

Accepted articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence, with authors retaining copyright, and each receives a permanent Crossref DOI. Content is discoverable via OpenAlex, Google Scholar, and an OAI-PMH endpoint, and the journal follows COPE ethical principles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What topics does the Journal of Biosciences & Bioengineering cover?

JBB covers the full breadth of biosciences and bioengineering, including molecular biology and gene engineering (PCR cloning, plasmid vectors, recombinant protein expression), microbial and industrial biotechnology, plant biotechnology and molecular pharming, proteomics, genomics, bioinformatics, environmental biotechnology, biochemical and bioprocess engineering, and cell and tissue engineering.

Who should read and publish in the Journal of Biosciences & Bioengineering?

JBB is intended for academic researchers, graduate students, biotechnologists, bioprocess engineers, and industry scientists working at the interface of biology and engineering. Authors with original research, reviews, methods papers, case reports, or editorials in any bioscience or bioengineering subfield are encouraged to submit.

How do I submit a manuscript to the Journal of Biosciences & Bioengineering?

Submit through the journal's online submission page after reviewing our author guidelines. JBB accepts original research, reviews, methods and protocol papers, case reports, and editorials in biosciences and bioengineering. All submissions are screened for scope and ethics before entering double-blind peer review.

Is the Journal of Biosciences & Bioengineering open access, and what licence applies?

Yes. JBB is fully open access. Accepted articles are published under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence, meaning authors retain copyright and readers may freely read, share, and reuse the work with attribution. There are no subscription or paywall barriers to reading published articles.

Does the Journal of Biosciences & Bioengineering use peer review and assign DOIs?

Every manuscript undergoes double-blind peer review by subject experts, and the journal follows COPE ethical principles. Each accepted article receives a permanent Crossref DOI and is made discoverable through OpenAlex, Google Scholar, and an OAI-PMH endpoint for indexing services.

Is there an article-processing charge, and are waivers available?

As an open-access journal, JBB applies an article-processing charge only on acceptance, which supports peer review, production, DOI registration, and permanent hosting. Waivers and discounts are available; authors who need financial support should contact the editorial office when submitting. There are no charges for rejected manuscripts.

What article types does the Journal of Biosciences & Bioengineering accept?

JBB publishes original research articles, review and mini-review articles, methods and protocol papers (such as cloning and expression techniques), case reports, short communications, and editorials, provided they make a clear contribution to biosciences or bioengineering.

How is the Journal of Biosciences & Bioengineering indexed and discoverable?

Published articles are assigned Crossref DOIs and are discoverable in OpenAlex and Google Scholar, with metadata exposed through an OAI-PMH endpoint for harvesters. The journal is actively working toward additional indexing, including preparing for DOAJ eligibility, while maintaining COPE-aligned editorial standards.
