Aims & Scope
The American Journal of Kidney Diseases is a peer-reviewed, open access nephrology journal published by Directive Publications, dedicated to advancing clinical and translational scholarship across the full spectrum of kidney diseases. As an open access kidney diseases journal, it provides a trusted, internationally accessible platform connecting nephrologists, transplant clinicians, dialysis teams, epidemiologists, and basic scientists.
The journal welcomes original research, reviews, case reports, and editorials spanning chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury, diabetic kidney disease, glomerular and tubulointerstitial disorders, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis adequacy (Kt/V, URR), kidney transplantation and recipient self-management, proteinuria, renal cell carcinoma, urinary stone disease, and the genetics of kidney disease.
We also encourage work on care delivery and innovation, including intelligent automation in dialysis, machine learning in nephrology, and patient-centred outcomes research. Topics range from molecular mechanisms and biomarkers to population health, clinical epidemiology, and health-services evaluation.
Every submission undergoes rigorous double-blind peer review. Accepted articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence, with authors retaining copyright, and are assigned a permanent Crossref DOI. Content is discoverable via OpenAlex and Google Scholar and exposed through an OAI-PMH endpoint, and the journal follows COPE ethical principles to safeguard the integrity of the scholarly record.

Frequently Asked Questions
What topics does The American Journal of Kidney Diseases cover?
The journal covers the full range of nephrology and kidney diseases, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury, diabetic kidney disease, glomerular and tubulointerstitial disorders, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, kidney transplantation, proteinuria, renal cell carcinoma, urinary stone disease, and emerging areas such as machine learning and intelligent automation in kidney care.
Who should read and publish in The American Journal of Kidney Diseases?
It is intended for nephrologists, transplant physicians, dialysis nurses and technologists, internists, clinical epidemiologists, basic and translational kidney researchers, and graduate students. Authors investigating any aspect of kidney disease, from molecular mechanisms to clinical outcomes and health services, are welcome to submit.
Is The American Journal of Kidney Diseases open access?
Yes. Every accepted article is published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence. Authors retain copyright, and readers worldwide can read, download, and reuse articles freely with proper attribution.
What article types does the journal accept?
The journal accepts original research articles, narrative and systematic reviews, clinical case reports (such as glomerulonephritis, vasculitis, FSGS, or myeloma-related kidney disease), short communications, and editorials addressing theoretical, methodological, translational, and applied dimensions of kidney diseases.
How does peer review work at The American Journal of Kidney Diseases?
All submissions undergo rigorous double-blind peer review, in which the identities of authors and reviewers are kept confidential to support impartial assessment. The journal follows COPE ethical principles for publication integrity, authorship, and handling of corrections or retractions.
Will my article receive a DOI and be discoverable?
Yes. Each published article is assigned a permanent Crossref DOI to ensure citability and long-term availability. Articles are indexed in OpenAlex and Google Scholar and exposed through an OAI-PMH endpoint, with discoverability in additional services being actively expanded.
Are there article-processing charges or waivers for authors?
As an open access journal, an article-processing charge applies only on acceptance to support peer review, production, DOI registration, and long-term hosting. Waivers and discounts are available for authors facing financial constraints; contact the editorial office for current details.
How do I submit a manuscript on chronic kidney disease or dialysis?
Prepare your manuscript according to the author guidelines, then submit through the journal's submission page. Clinical studies on CKD, dialysis adequacy, transplantation, and kidney disease epidemiology are especially encouraged, as are case reports and methodologically rigorous reviews.
