Aims & Scope

The Journal of Clinical Microbiology is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by Directive Publications that advances the science and practice of clinical and medical microbiology. The journal serves microbiologists, infectious disease clinicians, laboratory scientists and public health researchers with rigorous, original scholarship that bridges the diagnostic laboratory and the bedside.

We welcome original research, reviews, case reports and editorials across antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial stewardship, diagnostic and molecular microbiology, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections, healthcare-associated infections, bloodstream infections, tuberculosis, and emerging and zoonotic pathogens. Studies applying One Health, genomics, next-generation sequencing and surveillance methods are particularly encouraged.

Every submission undergoes double-blind peer review in line with COPE ethical principles. Accepted articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence, with authors retaining copyright, and each receives a permanent Crossref DOI.

Content is discoverable through Google Scholar and OpenAlex and harvestable via our OAI-PMH endpoint, ensuring citability and long-term availability for a global readership of researchers and practitioners.

Frequently Asked Questions

What topics does The Journal of Clinical Microbiology cover?

The journal covers the full breadth of clinical and medical microbiology, including antimicrobial resistance and stewardship, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, diagnostic and molecular microbiology, bloodstream and healthcare-associated infections, tuberculosis, fungal infections such as cryptococcosis, viral and zoonotic pathogens, and One Health approaches to infection control.

Who should read and publish in The Journal of Clinical Microbiology?

It is intended for clinical microbiologists, infectious disease physicians, laboratory scientists, antimicrobial stewardship pharmacists, epidemiologists and public health researchers. Authors working on AMR, diagnostics, infection prevention or surveillance, including those in low- and middle-resource settings, are encouraged to submit.

How do I submit a manuscript to The Journal of Clinical Microbiology?

Submissions are made through the Directive Publications submit page. Prepare your manuscript according to the author guidelines, then upload it for editorial screening and double-blind peer review. The journal welcomes original research, reviews, case reports and editorials in clinical microbiology.

What article types does the journal accept?

The Journal of Clinical Microbiology accepts original research articles, systematic and narrative reviews, case reports (for example unusual infections or resistant pathogens), short communications and editorials addressing methodological, translational and applied microbiology.

Is The Journal of Clinical Microbiology open access, and who owns copyright?

Yes. All articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence, so they are free to read and reuse with attribution. Authors retain copyright to their work.

How does peer review work and is there an article-processing charge?

Every manuscript undergoes double-blind peer review following COPE ethical principles. An article-processing charge applies only on acceptance, and waivers or discounts are available on request, including for authors from lower-income settings; contact the editorial office for current details.

Will my article receive a DOI and be discoverable?

Yes. Each accepted article is assigned a permanent Crossref DOI for citability and is indexed in OpenAlex and discoverable via Google Scholar. Metadata is also exposed through an OAI-PMH endpoint for harvesting by scholarly aggregators.

Is The Journal of Clinical Microbiology indexed in DOAJ, PubMed or Scopus?

As a new open-access title, the journal is building its indexing footprint. It is currently discoverable via Google Scholar and OpenAlex with permanent Crossref DOIs, and is preparing applications to databases such as DOAJ while working toward eligibility for PubMed Central and other indexes.
